Bleacher Views 8-15-2018

In an attempt to follow, years later, in the footsteps of Rick Haberman’s popular “From The Cheap Seats” weekly column, I am taking a step in that same direction with a similar informational feature that will appear in all four Johnson Publishing newspapers each week.

Readers of the Tri-County News, Fulda Free Press, Murray County News and the Nobles County Review will get the same weekly edition of “Bleacher Views,” while each paper will also get a once-a-month “Down Memory Lane” article. This rotating feature will detail some memories from a meaningful past happening — an event, a memorable team or a special person — which impacted the people of the area surrounding that particular community.

How the features will rotate each month will be decided upon soon, but for now, I will express a few thoughts about loyalty — and the lack of it in professional sports. I will say a few things here which might catch some interest, some agreement and, perhaps, some disagreement.  This will be a rare thing, as most of my columns will be more about local events and people.

Upon learning of his 21 consecutive years of loyalty to the Dallas Mavericks, I have decided that Dirk Nowitzki  is my favorite pro athlete.  Except for one year of “re-loading” in Europe after his rookie season with the Mavericks (’99-00), Nowitzki has played his entire NBA career with Dallas. Contrast that to players like LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony or Kevin Durant, who seem to “jump ship” frequently for more money or more of a chance at a championship. I like Nowitzki’s loyalty to the Mavricks.

Is Kirk Cousins really three times better than Case Keenum?  I liked Case Keenum. An “underdog” during his NFL career — despite excelling as a college quarterback at the University of Houston with several very impressive statistics — Keenum played well last season for the Vikings. But, he was released in favor of signing Cousins to an unbelievable big contract. I may be proven wrong, but until Cousins proves that he’s worth that much money, I am a Denver Broncos fans — go Case Keenum.

The Twins trading away of Eduardo Escobar has got be among the dumbest moves in franchise history. The guy, loved by his teammates for his versatility, hustle and positive attiude, was having a stellar all-around season, playing multiple infield positions and leading the entire major league in doubles. Getting the chance to play every day, he was getting better and better. Then the Twins trade him for a trio of minor league “prospects” —- WOW!!   Go Arizona Diamondbacks, I hope that Eduardo carries you to the World Series.

With that, I will close for this week as high school fall sports practices are underway. Soon meets, matches and games will be happening. Let’s hope that fans stay loyal to their teams as the new school year looms closer and closer.
