The State Legislature enacted  the Vietnam Veterans bonus payment this spring. The Vietnam Veterans Bonus Act provides for payment from $100 to $600 depending on length and location of service.

Embarking on its first four-day fair, the Murray County Fair begins it 63rd year on Wednesday, August 15th.

Completion is near on the county park between first and second lakes. Electricity and water have been installed as well as posts surrounding the parking lot and driveway.

Fulda Firemen were called Sunday evening to Franklin’s Bakery were Policeman Jerry Hoff discovered smoke and turned in the alarm. Only minor damage was reported.

Do to the fire, Franklin’s Bakery will be closed until Monday, August 20th.

All Fulda Schools will open on Tuesday, August 28th with students attending classes until noon and then being sent home for lunch. The first full day of school will be Wednesday, August 29th.

Principal Ronald Udy announced today a free meal policy for St. Paul’s Lutheran School children unable to pay.

Lois Arens and Dennis Imholte were married in St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church on Saturday, August 11th. The couple plan to make their home near Watkins.

Jane Kriel and Steven Horn were married in Mount Olive Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 14th.  The couple is at home in Richfield, Minnesota.

A son, Lance was born, August 6th to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Malenke.

A son, Nels was born to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Nelson on August 2nd. Grandparents include Mr. and Mrs. Art Stenke and Mrs. Herbert Nelson.

The Fulda Theatre is showing the Poseidon Adventure staring Gene Hackman and Shelley Winters on August 17, 18, & 19.

Wednesday, August 17, 1988

Gold Medal Winner, Nancy Overman, returns home from the National Hershey Track Meet held in Hershey, Pennsylvania where she achieved first place in the softball throw forages 11-12.

With the temps over 100 degrees, everyone tried to find a way to cool down; some enjoyed bicycling and others swimming in the lake.

Not enjoying the heat of Monday afternoon were Butch Kruger and Daryl Ommen who had the hot job of removing the old tanks to make way for the new ones at Nobles County Coop.

Airman John D. Lubben, son of Dean and Mary Jo Lubben of Fulda, has graduated from the Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Erick Carlson passed away at the age of 90 years old on August 10, 1988.

Diane Kalas and Calvin Harms announce their engagement. The couple plan an October 8th wedding.

Ramerth Ag Service has taken to the air to helped local farmers combat the recent Spider Mite infestation in the Soybeans.

Celebrating birthdays at Maple Lawn this month were Edyth Lambert and Julie Beckman.

Several local business owners approached the city council on August 17th with concerns of ‘making it through the construction’. The businesses were looking for a low-interest loan of some sort which would assist them in paying overhead costs accumulating due to lack of funds coming through the door due to the street construction.

Trish Kramer, Fulda Elementary School Librarian is this years honorary spokesperson for Murray County Relay for Life.

Dayna and Michelle Bestge, daughters of Dale and Deb Bestge, will show their lambs, calves and heifers at the Nobles County Fair. The girls will also show their horses, Duke and Spook, whom they have been training for many years.

The business section was a buzz with commotion this week as Larson Crane worked diligently to catch up on lost time hooking water up to buildings on both sides of the street.

With the votes cast and counted, the proposed merger between Prairie Land Cooperative and Consolidated Co-op will become a reality. New Vision Cooperative will be the name of the combined company.

Marv and Maxine Heinrichs celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their seven children who surprised them with a family cruise on the Disney Magic. The 31 family members boarded the Disney Magic, a new ocean liner,  in Orlando, Florida.

Judy and David Green are the parents of twins, Nicholas and Christianna, born August 17th. Grandparents are Loren and Arleen Green and Jerome and LaVerna Olsem.

Sonja Smidt and Dean Dierks were married May 2nd at Brickyard Park in Hastings, NE.

Darwin Gehl and Ann Kruger announce their engagement. The couple plan a September 19th wedding at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulda.

Tammy White and Doug Zemler will be united in marriage on August 28th at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford.

Carolyn Behr and Robert Brown announce their forthcoming wedding plans with a reception to be held August 23rd.

Angelena Syverson and Joseph Bunkers wish to announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. A September wedding is planned.

Krista Holton and Peter Beerman announce their engagement. The couple will be married at Akron Four Square Church on June 26, 1999.

Leo and Dolores Crowley will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on August 23rd.

Mary Magdalen Wahl, 85, passed away on August 16th.

Dorothy Riemer passed away on August 10th at the age of 83 years old.

Victor Moore  passed away at the age of 76 years old on August 16th.

The third annual Murray County Relay for Life raises over $41,000 for cancer research, nearly doubling he $20,000 goal. An estimated 2,000 people were in attendance.

Women of Today sponsor week long activities for kids in the area.
