Bondin Belfast 4-H member, Jarred Jans, is ready for Murray County Fair. He will be showing a Chi breeding heifer as well as a Maine steer.
Jans has been a member of Murray County 4-H since he was in Cloverbuds, joining the program at the age of five. He began showing cattle in open shows at the age of four years. Jans graduated from Fulda High School in 2017 and chose to continue in the 4-H program through this year.
Although he has actively shown pigs, beef and entered many other exhibits for thirteen years at the Murray County Fair, this year he has chosen to concentrate just on beef.
One year he worked with a bottle calf from the Adopt-A-Holstein program. Another year, Jans received a heifer from the Rolling Hills Bank Heifer Project.
Throughout all of the years of being a 4-H member, Jans stated that he has enjoyed a host of activities as well as learning many things he might not have been exposed to. “Through 4-H, I have met a lot of people and have made several life-long friends. You learn about being a volunteer as you help prepare the grounds and barns for fair, and work in the food stand. Being a 4-H member has allowed me to promote 4-H and agriculture,” he said. “I suppose what I have enjoyed the very most is meeting the people that I have and being able to play together and work together as we get ready for shows. In recent years, we’ve gotten together with other 4-H families the night before the show to practice for the show. That has been a lot of fun.”
