Murray County has a very successful Relay

Once again Murray County did not disappoint with the out pouring of support shown at the 2018 Relay for Life that was held on August 11 at the Murray County Fairgrounds. $62,736.00 was the preliminary total given at the closing ceremony. The MCC Student Council team topped the ranks with a grand total of $11,183 to achieve first. place this year in fundraising. Their main event is the Coaches VS Cancer event held in the spring at MCC. The second place team was Currie with $10,976 and rounding out the top three was Schaap Sanitation with $8,800.

There were approx. 120 survivors and guests served a meal prepared by the Pork Producers and sponsored by MCC Staff and Teachers and the Pork Producers.

This year nine teams helped to make the event one to remember.

Totzke Funeral Home once again sponsored the butterfly release. It was a warm night the butterflies enjoyed their opportunity to spread their wings in SW Minnesota.

We were honored to have our three honorary chairs speak. This Year Joann Jefson, Joe Brossard and Wayne Brock were the honored survivors.

Travis VanderSteen shared some exciting research news with those in attendance. He is currently a researcher for Mayo and is working on some new options for breast cancer.

There were 2000 plus luminaries lighting the track at sunset. As always, the inspiration for finding a cure is found in the luminaries that list those who have lost their cancer journey and those on their cancer journey.

The 2019 Relay for Life will be held the second Saturday in August next year also. It is never to early to get your team organized and being the task of raising funds to help put an end to cancer.

If you have additional questions, feel free to contact Janet Voges or Linda Tobias this year’s event chairs.

Thank You Murray County for a job well done.
