Thursday, Sept. 20, 1973

Mr. Dwayne Westra presented Mrs. Ethel LaPlante with a dish from the faculty at her retirement party held on Wednesday. Mrs. LaPlanete faithfully taught in the Fulda Elementary School for fifteen years.

Richard Zemler has taken a position as manager at the Great Plains Supply Company in Little Rock, Iowa. Replacing Zemler as assistant manager at the Great Plains Supply Company in Fulda is Everett Brands of Pipestone

Four boys of the Fulda Cub Scout Pack 123 participated in the Summer Olypmics held at Ludlow Park in Worthington. Attending from Fulda were Brett Johlfs, Charley Howe, Tim Holinka and Phil Kunzweiler.

Michael Behr graduated from the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

The Fulda Raiders defeated Jasper 46-16 last Friday evening in a very important conference match-up. Fulda and Jasper were the two teams picked as having the best chance to win the conference title. If this was any indication, Fulda may be on their way to another championship.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Olsem are the parents of a daughter, Sharon born August 31st. Grandparents include Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kirchner and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Olsem.

Elizabeth Kirchner passed away at the age of 89 years old on September 13, 1973.

Funeral services were held for Emma Raap who passed away at the age of 78 years old.

Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1988

Minnesota Century Farm Family honors were given to the Ken Duerr family who have farmed the land since 1888. Ken’s grandfather, Leonhard, came to the area from Germany and purchased the land from the railroad. Ken’s father, William, took over the farm in 1935.

Mike Patrick gives a motivational talk to students at the Fulda High School. Mike was a junior at the Worthington High School when he was injured in a football game and became a quadriplegic in a blink of an eye. Mike had students laughing, crying, and in awe of his journey.

Celebrating birthdays at Maple Lawn Nursing Home were Lillian Iverson, Grace Onken, Bernie Cosfriff and Bill Pontow.

Albert and Barb Olsem are the parents  of a son, Alexander, born September 9th. Grandparents are Jerome and LaVerna Olsem and Roy and Betty Winter.

  Sharee Koster and Michael Van Voorst were united in marriage on August 13th at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Worthington.

Bernard Gotmer passed away suddenly at his home at the age of 80 years old on September 15, 1988.

Peter Wagner passed away on September 4th at the age of 84 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998

The Fulda City Council gave its approval to put bituminous in the alley between First National Bank and Maynards, one full block to Lafayette Avenue and 1/2 block between the bank and the Legion from Front Street to the center of the block. The adjacent property owners will be paying for their portion of the expenses. The Community/Legion Hall parking lot will also be blacktopped with the Legion paying $5,000 towards the $13,000 project. The city will be paying 16 thousand and will be borrowing it from the Cable TV account.

St. Paul Avenue is open to traffic – on Monday, city employee Doug Stewart painted on the temporary lines.

Fulda Retail Trade, along with the city and the county will be holding a Street Party to celebrate the ‘End of Construction’. The event will be held September 30th – public invited.

Dwana Paplow, applied for, and received, a position at the State Fair in a program called Arts-In. Dwana assisted in the production of A Fantastic Voyage performed by a group called Harkeness. This is Dwana’s second year as a part of the Tech Crew at the State Fair.

All 28 entrants to the Mapleview Estates Apple Pie Baking Contest were winners. “The judges had a hard choice,” said Director Fran Kramer. “There was not a bad pie in the bunch.” Evelyn Behr received 1st place; Anne Dierks – 2nd place; and Katheryn Crowley – 3rd place.

Dana Dirksen and Dean Wieck were married June 20th at Immanuel American Lutheran Church in Fulda. The couple plans to make their home in Eyota, Minnesota.

Elizabeth Goedtke and Troy Stapek announce their engagement. The couple is planning an October 10th wedding at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulda.

Celebrating birthdays at Maple Lawn Nursing Home are Lillian Iverson, Mary Hogan, Lucille Swanson, Rose Bremmer, Lillian Popkin and Geleta Olson.

Farmers and Congressmen band together at the Great Upper Midwest Farm Price Crisis Rally held at the Nobles County Fair Grounds on Saturday. Representative Ted Winter was one of the politicians to speak at the rally.

Steve Cohrs passed away on September 16th at the age of 41 years old. Steve served as Murray County Commissioner since 1991.
