The Murray County Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, September 25th. One of the items on the agenda was to set the preliminary levy which needs to be submitted to the State of Minnesota by September 30th. The preliminary levy can be reduced, however, it can not rise when the final levy is set in December.
Below are the levy numbers in relation to the 2018 numbers. They represent all budget requests as presented on 7-10-18 and 7-11-18. In addition $274,904 for sheriff’s office staffing requests, $6,944.76 for assessor office staffing request, and $20,463,89 for license center office staffing request. Additionally $438,580 for the 2019 PrimeWest payment – using $250,000 earmarked for capital projects in 2019 as well as $250,000 of reserves earmarked for capital projects from the 2018 budget. Auditor Winter pointed out the preliminary levy as presented does not add anything to county reserves.
In setting the preliminary levy Commissioner Kluis shared his concern stating he wasn’t happy with how they (the board) is paying for the PrimeWest payment – meaning using the wind tax funds. Commissioner Thiner feels it’s too much of a tax burden on the residents who are already paying high taxes.
