One of the favorite flavors of fall for most people is the sweet, tangy taste of apples. Making apple cider has been a tradition for the Timmerman family, Lake Wilson, for many years. They shared that tradition with the residents at Maple Lawn Senior Care on Wednesday afternoon.
Mark and Janet Timmerman brought in their family’s wooden apple press to the dining room at Maple Lawn. They also brought a bushel of apples. Setting up a makeshift “kitchen” complete with table and apple processing knives and bowls, the process of making apple cider began.
Volunteers helped turn the crank on the H.R. Apple Press, as Janet cut the apples and Mark put them in the press. Mark’s mom, Amanda, is a resident at Maple Lawn and was happy to have the occasion to see the press in action.
Mark and Janet explained that Amanda, Mark’s mom, who lived a short distance from Lake Wilson, had an orchard of about 25 to 30 apple trees. “Each fall our family would all get together to make apple cider. Gallons and gallons of apple cider!” Janet exclaimed.
Mark and Janet had spent the early part of their Wednesday morning washing the apples in preparation for the press. When asked how the apple trees were cared for, Mark responded, “We do not prune them and we do not spray them. No chemicals. You might say they are organic.”
