“It is emotional. He never got a big welcome home. And I’m glad to be here to do it today,” Roxann Polzine said during a television interview after her husband, Alfred returned from the Midwest Honor Flight. Rural Brewster residents, the Polzines shared the story of a very busy day meant to honor those who have served their country.
Alfred went on the flight on Tuesday, September 25, leaving at 3:00 a.m. from Sioux Falls. The night before, the 90 Veterans going on the flight met their guardians (assistants) for a banquet supper. Additional staff including nurses, medics and television reporters were also on the flight which departed for Washington, D.C.
“Every Veteran had a guardian to help,” Alfred explained. Assisting Alfred was Larry Bauder, Hawarden, Iowa, a Vietnam War Veteran. The majority of the Veterans on the flight were Korean War Veterans, although there were some from World War II and Vietnam.
