The Fulda High School theatre department is currently rehearsing for their upcoming 2018 fall musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera”, which will be performed Nov. 16-18 at the Fulda Elementary School stage. This is the 4th FHS fall musical – previous shows include “The Wizard of Oz” – 2012, “A Christmas Carol” – 2014, and “Cinderella” – 2016. Co-directors Heidi Appel and Matthew Saxman are excited to share a bit about the production and its history, why they’ve picked this show, and what audiences can expect.
“The Phantom of the Opera” is based on a 1909 novel by French author Gaston Leroux, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra. It tells a fictional story, though it is set in a real Paris opera house. This theatre is haunted by a disfigured, conflicted musical genius who writes the productions for the theatre. This Phantom, who longs for connection and acceptance in the world, falls in love with Christine, a young soprano in the opera company, and haunts and torments her. Meanwhile, Christine is falling in love with another man, Raoul, while at the same time being unwillingly thrust into the leading stage roles by her “Angel of Music” and the theatre’s managers.
