Maynard Larson, a former Murray County Commissioner, continued to serve the citizens of the county after he left public service by leaving a legacy for the future. In 1989, Maynard and Viola Larson donated $20,000 to the County with the stipulation that it not be spent for at least 25 years, at which time the Murray County Board of Commissioners could determine how best to spend the donation on a county park project.
In the meantime, the interest earned on the money could be used for miscellaneous park improvements. It was decided to dedicate the funds to a project at Lime Lake Park as the Larsons lived in the Avoca area for the majority of their life together.
This past spring and summer, Murray County used the $20,000 to install new bathrooms and upgrade the picnic shelter at the park. This fall, an engraved rock was placed at the park to recognize Maynard and Viola Larson’s donation, which made these improvements to the park possible.
We hope that Lime Lake Park users have enjoyed these recent improvement. We know that there has been more camping at the park since the improvements were made. And we are grateful to the Larsons, whose legacy lives on!
