After six months of deployment in Iraq, Anna Brandt has returned home to southwestern Minnesota and will be coaching the Heron Lake-Okabena/ Fulda Coyotes girls basketball team this winter.
With Veteran’s Day just past, and high school girls basketball season about to start, this young lady has returned from serving her country to coach the team after a year off.
Anna coached the HLO Wildcats girls team two years ago, along with coaching the softball team, before she was deployed with the 248th Aviation Support Battalion. They were in Iraq for six months.
“We worked to build a warehouse in Al Asad, Iraq,” Anna said of her duties while in Iraq. The warehouse was used for aviation parts for the 449th Combat Aviation Brigade. Her battalion gives support to the Army, Marines, Special Forces and the Air Force.
She is on her fifth year of six scheduled in the service. Recently promoted to Sergeant, Anna pointed out that service “is a chance to serve more than just your community. It’s a lot bigger than yourself or your community.”
