A dozen athletes contribute scoring as HL-O / Fulda wins seven-team track and field meet

Getting scoring contributions from a dozen athletes, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes’ girls’ track and field squad scored enough points to win the seven-team Wolverine Classic last Friday (April 5) at Mountain Lake’s Munson Field.

The annual early-season outdoor meet, sponsored by the Mountain Lake Observer (the community’s weekly newspaper), featured seven high school teams and had all of the standard events, except the shot put and discus — as the throwing areas were too soft and mushy.

It was the first team victory for the Coyotes who are in their second spring as a paired program.

“I think this is the first time in about 10 years that I have had the privilege of coaching a team which finished at the top of the team standings,” beamed HL-O / Fulda head girls’ track and field coach Gary Hildebrandt. “We had great performances up and down the lineup, getting two first-place finishes from Morgan Gehl and a pole vault win from Faith White, along with so many other second through eighth-place points which really added up.”
