“Life is too precious, do not destroy it, Life is life, fight for it.” These words, written by Mother Theresa, are the ones that speaker Matt Logan closed his presentation to the students at Fulda High School with on Wednesday afternoon. Logan was present at the school to share his story about Distracted Driving and How It Changed My Life – Deej’s Story.
Logan, Byron, MN, is the father of four children, a native of Rochester, and a former custom furniture woodworker. He lost his 17 year old daughter, Deej, to distracted driving on September 4, 2012. His story is one of heartbreak and great loss. His presentation is one that will remain forever in the minds of those he speaks to.
“I am ashamed that I have texted while driving. I don’t anymore. My daughter died because of it,” Logan told the students. “How do I introduce you to her? How do I tell you about her contagious personality? That she was a levelheaded teen who loved to have fun and made the best of every situation. She hated speech class. She was determined to leave things better than she found them.”
Logan said that on the evening before Deej’s first day of her senior year, she was stressing about her hair. “She wanted her hair just right for her first day of senior year selfie. She already had her senior prom planned out, had chosen the dress she would wear and was saving up for it,” Logan shared. “About 3 p.m. on that first day of school, Deej called and told me about the fun things that senior year would involve. She told me about drama that had taken place during the noon hour that she was frustrated about. She told me about some of the things that she was going to be doing within the next few hours. It was a normal, few minutes conversation.”
