Inundated is a descriptive word for the rainfall received in the Fulda area during the week of September 10th – 13th. Rainfall amounts of 6 to 8 inches were reported in Murray County from storms on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
An area near Avoca reported almost eleven inches.
Residents of Fulda, Avoca, Chandler, Hadley, Lake Wilson and Slayton were pumping water out of their basements, with several people reporting at least five inches of flooding. What resulted were flooded roads and many road closures due to the water rising in the rivers and creeks.
On Thursday morning, travelers in Murray County were advised to avoid all areas where water was over the road. Motorists were reminded to never drive around barricades.
In a special meeting held on Friday morning, Murray County Commissioners declared a state of emergency. Estimated damage to township and county roadways was between $50,000 to $75,000.
On Sunday, the Murray County Sheriff’s Office issued a “No Wake Restriction” due to high water levels at Lake Shetek.
The heavy rainfall storms also affected Cottonwood and Pipestone counties.
