Augustana University Choir travels to Europe; Wendland enjoys singing in Germany and Italy

The Augustana University Choir left for Berlin and Rome on January 6, and returned on Tuesday, January 24.

“For the first half of the trip it was one a day,” explained Kyle Wendland of the trip that he was part of as a member of the Augustana Choir. “Then they were a little more spread out.” Two-thirds of the time was spent in Germany and the final third in Italy.

He indicated that Augustana focuses on international opportunities for their students. “It gives you a lot of perspective to be ‘the foreigner’,” Kyle explained of being in another country.

Not part of any organized choir while in high school, Kyle had seen a poster offering auditions after he started school at Augustana in Sioux Falls. “I thought maybe I should try that,” Kyle said. A 2013 graduate of Round Lake-Brewster High School, Kyle is the son of Brad and Pam Wendland of Round Lake.

“There are three levels of choir, the girls, mixed (boy and girls) and the Augustana Choir,” he explained. Kyle was selected to be a member of the Augustana Choir, which is the top level choir, and is able to tour in the United States and abroad.  “It’s been a treat,” Kyle said of being a member of the Augie Choir. “The connections you make with others are just great.”
