Ripping a trio of back-to-back RBI singles, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning at Tracy last Monday (May  21) and earned a 7-5 high school baseball victory over the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers.

The non-conference clash was scheduled to be played at Heron Lake, but an all-day local rainfall forced the contest to be moved to Tracy.

The Coyotes, however, were still the home team.

The victory by HLOF, coming on the heels of a win over Glenville-Emmons / Alden-Conger by an identical 7-5 score the previous Friday (May 18), improved the Coyotes overall record for the spring to 5-8.

T-M-B took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first. The Coyotes responded with a solo run in the bottom of the frame as Ethan Becker cracked a two-out triple and scored on a Panther error.

Giving lots of kids some playing time in the final regular-season high school baseball game of the season, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes were defeated by Class AA St. James on the Saints’ home field last Tuesday (May 22) by a final score of 11-1.

St. James scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, crossed the plate once each in both the second and third innings before scoring twice in the fourth and four times in the fifth.

HLOF’s lone run came in the top of the third inning when sophomore right fielder Dylan Johanning drew a one-out walk and scored on junior second baseman Eli Becker’s RB I single.

Becker (2-for-2) had opened the game with a leadoff single in the top of the first. Senior first baseman Jacob Burdick had HLOF’s only other hit, a leadoff single in the fourth.

Sophomore Preston Katona reached base on an error by the St. James second baseman to start the top of the sixth, but was stranded there as the Saints notched three straight strikeouts.

A total of 13 Coyotes had at bats in the game, which ended before more players were ready to get a chance in the top of the seventh.
