Utilizing superior speed and a couple of break-away scoring plays, the Jaguars of Renville County West High School scored often last Friday night (September 6) in Danube and earned a 48-8 victory over Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda in a 9-Man football game, between two programs which battled evenly (a 48-42 Coyote win at Heron Lake) a season ago.
“They were as fast as advertised,” summed up HL-O / F co-head coach and offensive coordinator Jonathon Curry about this year’s Jaguars. “We had plenty of chances to score, but unfortunately could only punch it across (the goal line) one time.”
The Coyotes scored their lone touchdown midway through the fourth quarter when junior running back Matt Madsen broke free for a 55-yard TD burst with 6:52 remaining in the game.
Madsen, who finished with 124 yards rushing on 14 carries (8.9 yards per carry), also ran across the goal line for the two-point conversion, completing the game’s scoring — after RCW had built a 48-0 lead.
The Jaguars (2-0) opened up that huge spread by scoring 16 points (two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions) in each of the first three quarters.
Starting with a 64-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jack Howard to junior running back Brandon Hoberg, just one minute and 50 seconds after kickoff, RCW dominated the scoring, but not necessarily the line-of-scrimmage.
