A huge and hearty congratulations to former Adrian High School cross country star runner Megan Sauer on her recent successful completion of the Boston Marathon!

Megan, from Lismore, was a hard-working distance runner for the Dragons during a stellar career in both cross country and track. She was the middle of three Sauer sisters who ran on Adrian’s 2010 state championship team (along with older sister Alissa and younger sister Morgan). Without question, the Sauer sisters each gave every race an all-out effort and their determination was unmatched.

An all-state caliber cross country runner, Megan took her distance running dedication to Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato and ran competitively for four more years before returning to Adrian where she works as a paraprofessional at the middle school / high school.

Now 24 years old, Megan has overcome a heart murmur, anemia and asthma during her career and while training this past winter, she stepped in a hole and injured an Achilles tendon, which hampered her ability to go on long runs. Still, Megan completed the 26.2 miles at Boston on April 15 in three hours, 48 minutes and 48 seconds — which is quite amazing!

Megan has run a marathon nearly 35 minutes faster, having qualified for Boston by running a blistering time of three hours, 13 minutes and 59 minutes at Brainerd last April. That’s a really good time, averaging just over seven minutes per mile.

Julie Buntjer wrote a great front-page article about Megan Sauer’s remarkable accomplishment in last Wednesday’s (April 17) edition of The Globe, which is well worth reading.

Jack Iverson, 16-year-old son of 1984 Heron Lake-Okabena High School graduate Mark Iverson (and grandson of Mahlon), recently set a new school record in the long jump (21 feet, 8 inches) while competing for Big Lake High School (southeast of St. Cloud). A sophomore at Big Lake, Jack is a wide receiver in football and also plays basketball. This is his first-year participating in track and field and he also runs sprints for the Hornets, who have an enrollment of 835 in grades 9-12.

The Twins are off to a fine start, sporting a 12-7 record before starting Monday’s three-game series in Houston against the Astros. After losing three of four close games at home to Toronto last week, the Twins belted 11 home runs in a double header at Baltimore’s Camden Yards Saturday and then won a close game (4-3) on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the  Orioles. Lots of players are contributing, especially Eddie Rosario and Mitch Garver.

Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda’s young girls’ track and field squad has won three team titles so far this spring and the Coyotes may contend for a Red Rock Conference championship later this season. The combination of Southwest Minnesota Christian and Edgerton is the likely favorite, but the Coyotes have both quality and quantity through a depth-filled lineup. The conference meet is scheduled for May 16 at Mountain Lake.
