Playing its first game as a paired high school athletic program, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda varsity football team marched right down the field and scored eight quick points in the 2018 season-opener at Heron Lake’s Memorial Field last Thursday evening, August 30.

The visiting Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers, however, countered with four unanswered touchdowns (and a pair of two-point conversions) over the next 28 minutes of action and took a 28-8 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Coyotes capitalized on a short field early in the final quarter and punched across a second touchdown, completing the game’s scoring in a 28-14 loss.

“We had several good things happen for us in our first game,” summed up Coyotes’ co-head coach Jonathon Curry. “Our first drive was certainly a highlight and we continued to compete hard even after getting behind by 20 points. Five turnovers, including a pass interception which was returned for a touchdown, put the brakes on too many of our offensive possessions.”
