Most years, mid-winter is considered to be a perfect time for ice fishing and winter recreation. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is warning those who ice fish and enjoy frozen water recreation to check the ice thickness before venturing out on the ice
Ryan Doorenbos, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Supervisor, stationed in Windom, stated on Monday, “We certainly have had some close calls within the Windom Fish Management Area this year. Off the top of my head, we had some vehicles, ATVs and/or fish houses go in at North Shetek, Wood Lake in Lyon County, and we heard of one going in at Boot Lake in Jackson County. There were no injuries that I have heard of to date.”
When asked about the condition of water body ice, Doorenbos said, “As far as ice conditions, the standard DNR language is the ice is never 100% safe. We have had some variable ice thickness to date and not all lakes are equal or created the same. I have had reports this year that range from 8-13 inches. With our odd winter rain events and water on top of the ice, it has created some areas that are questionable.”
