Heron Lake-Okabena senior Cheyenne Schaffer capped a brilliant high school track and field career by placing in two events at the Section 3A Meet.
Schaffer tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 4-8 and later utilized a strong finishing kick to finish seventh in the 800-meter run, clocked at 2:32.12.
“Cheyenne competed at a very high level throughout her stellar career,” praised Hildebrandt. “She was a consistent multiple-event performer who we could always count on.”
Eighth-grader Faith White also scored for the Coyotes as she again cleared the pole vault bar at 7-5 and placed eighth in the event.
“Faith has made steady improvement as a vaulter this spring,” declared HL-O / Fulda head boys’ track and field coach Brad Holinka, who worked with all the pole vaulters throughout the season. “She has become a good all-around track kid, running the sprints and long jumping, but she sure loves pole vaulting and is becoming better and better.”
With a strong anchor leg by eighth-grader Skylar Fisher, the Coyotes won their heat in the 4 x 800-meter relay with a time of 10:57.46, coming within a second of the eighth-place time of 10:56.73 run by Pipestone Area in the fast heat.
Running the first three 800 legs for HLOF were seventh-grader Megan Bakke (2:43.50), eighth-grader Ella Stapek (2:49.09) and senior Rachel Salentiny (2:46.56) before Fisher anchored with her 2:38.51 split.
