First-place performances by Cheyenne Schaffer (high jump) and Morgan Gehl (800-meter run) were the best finishes for the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda girls’ track and field team at the 11-team Dick Davidson Invitational at Slayton last Thursday, May 10.
The large meet, known in the past as the Rebel Relays, was held in cool weather conditions under cloudy skies with light rain falling from time to time.
Paced by Schaffer’s (18.25 points) and Gehl’s (16.75 points) combined total of 35, the Coyotes racked up a total of 72 points in the meet and finished in the middle of the pack of the team standings.
Schaffer, a senior veteran, won the high jump (4-10), finished third in the 3,200 (13:54) and ran on a pair of placing relay teams.
Gehl, just a freshman, won the 800 (2:26.50), placed third in the 400 (1:05.56) and ran the anchor leg on HLOF’s sixth-place 4 x 200-meter relay.
Schaffer took the Coyotes from fifth to third in the 4 x 800-meter relay with a strong anchor leg. Running the first three legs were senior Rachel Salentiny, sophomore Khloe Gehl and junior Anna Volk. Schaffer’s sub 2:40 split gave the group an overall time of 11:28, earning the team six points.
