Being unable to stop the big plays last Friday night (September 14) at Morgan, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes were defeated in high school football action by the Cedar Mountain / Comfrey Cougars, who scored early and scored often.

The Cougars struck quickly, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter on their way to a 47-28 victory over the Coyotes, who had earned a thrilling 30-29 win over Red Rock Central the previous week (Friday, September 7 at Fulda).

Cedar Mountain / Comfrey had lost its first two games (28-6 to Hills-Beaver Creek at Morgan, August 31, and 27-24 to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at Tyler, September 7). But, the fleet-footed Cougars came ready to play on the home turf Friday.

Senior quarterback Eli Samuelson (6-3, 185) was especially effective for CM / C, both with the pass and the run. Samuelson tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter, including a 62-yard pass and run to Justin Lumbar on the Cougars’ first possession. A 68-yard run by Samuelson and a 15-yard TD strike to Lumbar put the hosts up 18-0 early.
