Alex Hein, 2009 Fulda High School graduate, came back to his stomping grounds last Friday night. Along with Hein came his team – the St. James Area Saints. Hein has been teaching social studies for the past four years in St. James. Two years ago he took over the head boys basketball coach position. Hein had spoken with Fulda’s athletic director, Gregg Slaathaug last spring about the possibility of bringing his team to Fulda.
The Saints, 7-7 on the season, gave the Raiders a great showing on the floor. They showed quickness along with size and squeezed out a 74-60 victory over the Fulda team.
St. James put up five quick points before Fulda’s Leighton Gehl went to work scoring a three and following up with a two charity stripe shots to knot the game at 5-5. A Matthias Kunerth pass into Justin Dierks once again tied the game at 7-7 before the Saints went on a 10-4 run to pass up the Raiders 20-11 by the eleven minute mark of the first half.
Kunerth dumped in two free throws, however, St. James dropped in five more points to gain a 26-13 advantage. With a bucket from Dalton Slinger, a free throw from Ben White and a three from Dierks, Fulda was able to cut the deficit to single digits, 19-28.
The Raiders struggled to score both inside and out – missing several easy shots. Fulda began climbing out the depths as Ben White got his shot to fall and Kunerth dropped in his bucket on a second attempt. A high-low from Kunerth to Dierks had the Raiders in their best position since the early minutes, 28-35.
