Considerable discussion took place regarding COVID-19 and the possible closing of the government center. Administrator Burke had met with department heads on Monday to discuss ways they could possible limit the face-to-face contact with constituents. He, along with Emergency Manager, Carl Nyquist, talked about what precautions the county should take in this time of social distancing. Burke informed the board most departments could accomplish their work via phone and email. The licensing center, however, is much more complicated. Annette Sievert, license center, explained they typically see approximately 75 people a day. She did comment that tab renewals and title changes could be done via the drop box at the government center.
It was moved by Commissioner Thiner, seconded by Commissioner Gunnink to declare a State of Emergency in Murray County due to the COVID-19 pandemic and grant the county administrator the authority to act as necessary, further moving to adopt the “Utilization of Paid Leave during a Public Health Emergency” policy.
Tuesday the board wasn’t ready to close the government center but as the virus moved closer to the area with three cases showing up in Martin County, Administrator Burke moved to close the center to the public beginning at noon on Wednesday, March 19.
The news release stated all Murray County buildings and facilities are closed to the public. The closure is based on prevention and protection measures in response to the expanding COVID-19 pandemic. This was done in consultation with Emergency Management Director Carl Nyquist.
In take these measures, Murray County remains in line with guidance for social distancing strategies recommended y both the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in addition to the Governor of Minnesota and the Commissioner of Health. This action will also help protect staff and the general public from being exposed to potentially sick individuals and spreading the virus to friends and families.
