Coyote B-Squad girls play fine team defense at Adrian

After struggling through a decisive loss to the Pipestone Area Arrows (at Fulda) last Tuesday (December 11), the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda B-Squad girls’ basketball team played good team defense in the first half at Adrian Friday evening, December 15.

The Arrows staked themselves to a huge 32-11 halftime lead and cruised to a 54-13 victory over the Coyotes. Adrian posted a low-scoring 13-7 lead on HLOF in the first half and claimed a 34-18 triumph over a short-handed Coyote squad which was missing several girls due to injuries and illnesses.

“Pipestone threw some really athletic and tall sophomores at us and we struggled with their aggressiveness and length,” summed up Coyotes’ Coach Jonathon Curry. “We were able to get a few things going late in the first half against a very high-quality team. It was a tough game for us.”

Five players scored in the game for the Coyotes, who made only three field goals against the Arrows. Sophomore Grace Kilian was HLOF’s leading scorer with six points, while junior Brittany Lais tallied four points and a trio of freshmen — Faith White, Chrissy Hermeling and Claire Reith — each made a free throw.

Reith (five) along with freshman teammates Skylar Fisher (five) and Taryn Evers (four) combined for 14 of HLOF’s points against Adrian, while Lais and freshman Addison Fisher each contributed two points for the Coyotes. Skylar Fisher sank the teams only three-point shot and Reith made HLOF’s only free throw.

“We battled the Dragons very well and played a good defensive first half,” declared Curry. “It will be a good measure to see how much we have improved when we play Adrian a second time.”

The Coyotes will host Adrian (at Okabena) in the last game of the regular season on February 18.
