Sinking 17-of-27 free throws (63 percent) last Tuesday evening (February 5), the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda varsity girls’ basketball team took command and defeated the visiting Edgerton Flying Dutchmen by a final score of 52-44 in a Red Rock Conference game at Okabena.
The victory was the first of the season for the Coyotes, who have come close to winning several other times.
After earning an eight-point halftime lead (25-17), HL-O / Fulda did enough things right to maintain the scoreboard advantage throughout an exciting second-half in which each team netted 27 points.
Seven girls scored in the highly-competitive contest, including a game-high 18 points by senior McKenzie Evers, who was seven-of-11 at the free throw line and also snagged a couple of rebounds.
Sophomore guard Morgan Gehl was five-of-six at the line and claimed seven rebounds in the game, pulling down five on the defensive end. Gehl also had two steals and two assists in the victory.
Junior guard Khloe Gehl (eight points, six rebounds, four offensive) and freshman guard Chrissy Hermeling (six points, one rebound, one steal, one assist) each connected twice with key three-point shots, helping the Coyotes who maintained and extend their leads.
