Again competing exceedingly well in several field events, along with advancing a pair of relay teams, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda boys performed well in the East Sub-Section (of Section 3A) high school track and field meet at Redwood Falls last Thursday, May 24.

Athletes from nine participating teams locked horns in 18 events, striving for peak performances and the right to advance to this week’s (Thursday, May 31) Section 3A Meet at Montevideo.

The top four finishers in each event (from each of the three sub-section meets) qualified, as did four “wild card” entrants who had the next-best performances among all fifth through eighth-place finishers at the three sub-sections.

The Northwest Sub-Section Meet was held in Montevideo and the Southwest Sub-Section held their events at Luverne.

HLOF seniors Matthias Kunerth (high jump, 800-meter run, 4 x 800-meter relay) and Leighton Gehl (high jump, 4 x 800 and 4 x 100) each qualified to compete at Montevideo in three events, while junior Gabe Spittle (pole vault and 4 x 100), junior Sam Cheadle (high jump and 4 x 100) and freshman Zach Their (shot put and discus) all qualified twice.

Junior Levi Spittle will run the leadoff leg on the Coyotes’ 4 x 100-meter relay and junior twin brothers Carlos Juarez (second leg) and Christian Juarez (anchor leg) both will run on HLOF’s advancing 4 x 800 relay.
