Striking for a pair of big plays in the second quarter and then adding a key fourth-quarter touchdown last Friday night (September 13), the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes claimed a 22-8 victory over the Cedar Mountain Cougars in a 9-man high school football game at Memorial Field in Heron Lake.
The victory gave the Coyotes (1-2) their first win of the season and also capped Homecoming week at HL-O High School in impressive fashion, as a large crowd was on-hand to cheer on the home team.
“It was a fun game and a big win for us,” Coyotes co-head coach Jonathon Curry said. “We played a good, tough game and made some big plays on both sides of the ball. I was very happy with the way we responded to everything that happened in the game, both good and bad.”
The Coyotes’ Matt Madsen rushed the ball 18 times for 130 yards (7.2 yards per carry) and scored a pair of touchdowns, while Eli Fest connected on 11 of 18 pass attempts for 182 yards — including a big 70-yard touchdown to Tyler Madison to open the game’s scoring.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Coyotes struck first with 10:50 remaining in the second quarter. Madison, who had five receptions for 99 yards, got behind the Cougars’ secondary and reeled in a long pass from Fest — taking it 70 yards for a touchdown.
The two-point conversion was no good, but HL-O/F was on the board with a 6-0 lead.
