Coyotes defeat Eagles, 69-53 Thier’s 20 points lead HL-O/F past Windom

Sparked by a 12-0 run midway through the second half, the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes pulled away from the Windom Eagles and captured a 69-53 victory in a non-conference high school boys’ basketball game last Thursday night (December 12) in Fulda.

Zach Thier drained five 3-pointers and scored 20 points to pace HL-O/F, which led 35-30 at halftime and took a 47-35 lead at the 10:50 mark of the second half following its 12-0 run —- which came after Windom scored the first five points out of the break to make it 35-35 with 15:00 on the clock.

Windom had a 17-10 lead with 11:05 to play in the first half before a 9-0 surge by the Coyotes — capped by a layup by Trevor King (five points, four rebounds) off a steal and nice lead pass from Isaiah Schmid (nine points, seven rebounds) — gave HL-O/F a 19-17 edge.

An 8-0 run later put the Coyotes up 33-25 before the Eagles closed the gap back to five (35-30) on a long, buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

“This was a good win for us,” Coyotes head coach Colby Pack said. “Our overall team defense was fantastic — help-side and recover defense. We had five guys playing defense together for the first time all year.”
