Coyotes earn third place in JCC volleyball tournament

Winning three-of-four matches last Saturday (September 14), Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda made a positive showing in the 12-team Carolyn Hummel Invitational high school volleyball tournament at Jackson County Central in Jackson.

Playing against quality competition throughout the long day, the Coyotes claimed third place in the tournament, winning seven of nine games — only going to a third set in their lone loss (to Litchfield, the tournament runner-up).

HL-O / F started the day by winning twice (25-23 and 25-18) over Triton, a large school from southeastern Minnesota, near Rochester. The tournament matches were best two-out-of-three rather than three-of-five (like non-tournament matches).

The Coyotes advanced in the winner’s bracket to tangle with Martin County West and defeated the Mavericks twice in convincing fashion, 25-11 and 25-14.

In the tournament’s semifinal round, HL-O / F was up against Litchfield, a large school near St. Cloud. The Dragons won the first set (25-20) and the third set (15-11), but the Coyotes won a close Game 2 by two points (25-23), forcing a third game to see who would advance to the finals. Litchfield was able to claim a four-point victory and played Rochester John Marshall for the championship, which was won by the Rockets.
