Playing in the annual Candy Cane Classic high school boys’ basketball tournament on Friday, December 20 and Saturday, December 21, the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes faced some stiff competition from teams in the northern half of Section 3A.
The Coyotes played Minneota (5-3) and Lakeview (6-1), losing by scores of 70-50 and 62-48, respectively. This year’s tournament was held at Westbrook.
“We played two good teams in this tournament,” Coyotes head coach Colby Pack said. “Unfortunately for us, we didn’t play real well and went 0-2. Hopefully we can use games like these to learn from and continue to get better as the season goes along.”
Minneota gradually pulled away from the Coyotes Friday and built a 36-28 lead at halftime.
The Vikings maintained at least a five-point advantage throughout the second half and had a lead as large as 22 (69-47) with four minutes remaining.
The Vikings were able to control the glass (36-28 rebounding advantage) and run the floor for several transition baskets, as the Coyotes had 26 turnovers in the game.
Zach Thier led HL-O/F with 14 points, while Eli Fest had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.
