Coyotes start 2019 season sweeping Trojans, 3-0

Utilizing aggressive and accurate serving throughout the three-game match last Thursday evening (August 22), the newly-created high school volleyball combination of Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda earned a closely-contested varsity sweep over the Worthington Trojans in the 2019 season-opener on the HL-O court in Okabena.

Game scores were 25-19, 27-25 and 25-14.

The second set was tied several times before the Coyotes prevailed by claiming a pair of consecutive points in some exciting action at the net in the extended game. HL-O / Fulda pulled away with a 7-2 finishing run in the first game and later earned leads of 9-4 and 18-7 in the third game before winning the set by 11 points to complete the 3-0 sweep.

“I really liked our energy,” declared Coyote head coach Trista Rhubee. “We came out with a lot of energy and we were aggressive right away, serving with authority.”

The whole team served well, as there were few misses and lots of aces. Junior middle hitter Hailey Liepold ran off a string of service points in the first game as the Coyotes changed an early 5-3 deficit into an 11-6 lead. She finished 17-of-17 for the match, including five aces, with her attacking jump-style serves.
