Scoring four runs in the top of the first inning and later getting clutch RBIs from Jacob Burdick and Taylor DeWall, along with a stellar three-inning relief pitching performance from sophomore Tyson Dirks, Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda edged Glenville-Emmons / Alden-Conger in high school baseball action at Glenville Friday (May 18) by a final score of 7-5.
The non-conference game, dubbed as the “Knutson Classic” because brothers Chad Knutson (HL-O / Fulda) and Lucas Knutson (G-E / A-C) are the two squad’s head coaches, was played for the second time this season after its inaugural contest last May.
A year ago — after being rained out on its original date — the game was played in Heron Lake (on Tuesday, May 23, 2017) and HL-O rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to claim a 9-2 victory. HL-O senior Logan Knutson earned the pitching victory for the Wildcats in that game, striking out eight Wolverine hitters over five scoreless innings.
This year, it was junior Eli Becker who took the mound for the Coyotes in the “Classic” and his teammates smacked the ball with authority in the top of the first inning, giving him a 4-0 lead.
