Millie Piper, a 5th grade student at the Fulda Elementary School, recently competed in the Multi-Regional Spelling Bee in Redwood Falls. Millie is the daughter of Karston and Shelly Piper. The spelling bee was sponsored by the Southwest/West Central Service Cooperative. Piper placed 4th out of 28 students and will advance to the State Competition in Fergus Falls on March 9th. Piper's day started out with a 25 word written test. After this test was completed, the students returned to the main hall for three rounds of oral competition. Millie spelled wedge, germinate, and tranquilizer. The three oral words and the written words were then added together to determine the 15 students that would advance to the spell down round. After a tie, the 15 students became 19 students. The spell down round would consist of each student spelling a word in random order until there is one student left. Piper would spell words like pragmatic, obstinate, taj, libretto, geode, and adjacent as students dropped off left and right. Going into the 11th round, there were 5 students left. Piper, unable to spell Sashimi, would go into a spell off for 4th place. Here, Piper would spell vigilante, misanthropy, machismo, and carmine to lock in 4th place and a trip to the state spelling bee. The spelling bee consisted of students from all over the southwestern/west central area of Minnesota and grades 5-8. Piper was one of two students in the 5th grade to compete. Congratulations to Millie Piper and good luck to her at the state spelling bee.
