Murray County Board of Commissioners Justin Hoffman takes over as Parks/Fairgrounds/Aeration director

Murray County Board of Commissioners approved the hiring of Justin Hoffman as Parks/Fairgrounds/Aeration director with at start date of March 15. There were 37 applicants for the position.

The board discussed at length the 10 proposals released recently by the Association of Minnesota Counties for redesign of state and county government. The conclusion was that the proposals were very premature and needed more study before presentation to the legislature. The counties would be expected to take over more services without the assistance of state aid. Further discussion will take place as the commissioners meet at a legislative conference on March 19 in the Cities.

Gilbert Breuer resigned as Heartland Express driver as he is moving from the area. Replacement for the position will begin immediately.

The board approved the job description - Building Maintenance Worker - formerly called Custodian into a single document. This will provide cross training for the various county office buildings maintenance.

Commissioners Gerald Magnus and Robert Moline were appointed to represent Murray County for continued discussion of the Joint Powers Agreement for Human Services and Public Health. Moline said the two entities are working very well together (on a trial basis).

Lyon County proposed a couple of options of sharing positions with Murray County. Their veteran’s officer is retiring in May and suggested a three county (Lyon, Redwood and Murray) officer. Lyon County also proposed contracting with Murray County for maintenance of Garvin Park. The suggested options will be discussed with the Lyon county administrator at a later date.

It is expected road restrictions will be enforced soon, Randy Groves said. An agreement for a cooperative street light with MNDOT at the corner of County Road #36 and Highway #30 was signed. MNDOT will pay for the construction and the county pays for the monthly electric charge and maintenance of the light. The location of the pole has not been determined.

The highway department is preparing for possible flooding his spring.

Commissioner John Giese and Public Relations Christy Riley will attend the Southern Minnesota Tourism Association meeting in Waseca on March 16-17.

A proclamation was signed designating Daffodil Days March 15-21 for the American Cancer Society.

Quotes will be received for shingling, painting and needed repairs of the Dinehart/ Holt house and opened on April 6 at 11 a.m. Consideration has been given to revamp the front of the museum for several years. The board approved the project to get quotes on materials for new windows and doors. Several fund raisers by the historical society have been held to help defray the cost. The project is to be completed this summer.

Jim Gertsema, EMS director, holds a refresher course every year in January for the EMTs. A snowmobile rescue drill was held in February and included five firemen. So far this year they have made 46 runs and five mental health transfers.

May 16-22 is designated as Emergency Medical Services week. Murray County EMS is planning a promotional drive for funds to purchase equipment and an ambulance during this week. Donations are accepted at any time.
