St. Paul’s Lutheran students are participating in the 2012 Americanism Fall Contest which is being sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9017 Ladies Auxiliary, according to Auxiliary president Sophia Hein.

Category 1 of the contest is for students in kindergarten through second grade. They were asked to color “Pledge of Allegiance” prints.

Category 2 is for third and fourth graders. They were asked to create a poster or collage and label it “Uncommon Heroes.” The students were told that ‘there are countless brave men and women from our founding fathers to our military of today, who have either given the ultimate sacrifice, have been injured, or have served in the United States Military.’ Mediums such as photos, drawings, graphics, magazine pictures or newspaper images were used to create the posters or collages.

Fifth and sixth grade students participating in Categroy 3 were asked to write an essay entitled ‘Patriotic Spirit.’ Essays were limited to 250 words or less.

Seventh and eighth grade students wrote essays to submit to the 2012-2013 Patriot’s Pen Competition. Using the theme “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers”, these students were instructed to write an essay that was 300-400 words in length.

All entries are judged by an Auxiliary committee at the local level, and are then are judged at the District level. The winning entries in each grade category at the District level are then sent to the Minnesota State Americanism Chair.

Winners of these Americanism contests will be announced by members of the VFW Post #9017 Ladies Auxiliary at a later date.
