After a busy week of wrestling, the Warriors had one more bout and they traveled to Garretson, South Dakota to take part in the Dan Pansch/Jesse James Invitational. FiveWarrior wrestlers were able to place in the tournament out of the many that took part.

The first wrestler to place in the tournament was Freshman Clayton Hartle. In the 113 pound class, Hartle was first matched up with James Lueders from Dell Rapids, and that match didn’t last long. Hartle was able to advance with a pin in 1:13 where he took on Tayt Boeckholt from West Central. The match was very close between the two wrestlers. In fact, overtime was needed to determine a winner in the match, and Hartle was able to claim the victory by decision, 7-5. Wyatt Shillingstad of Huron was standing in his way of the title match, but unfortunately for Hartle, he was pinned in 3:47. Jacob Fitzgerald of Garretson was Hartle’s next opponent in the double elimination style bracket where he moved on with a 2-0 decision. In his final match of the tournament, Hartle was matched up with John Lemer of Canton for third place. The match was close to the end, but Lemer came out on top by decision, 5-2, and that gave fourth place to Hartle.

Ben Blanchette, another Freshman wrestler for the Warriors, had a great run himself in the 126 pound class. Blanchette started his day against Sean Tillma of Garretson where he advanced by fall in 2:59. In the second round, Brock Kortan from Sioux Falls Roosevelt wrestled Blanchette, and that was again won by fall in 3:54. Just like Hartle, Blanchette was in the same position as Ryan Schuman from Tri Valley stood in his way of the title match, but Schuman gave him his first loss by fall in 3:56. Blanchette was bound and determined to fight back for a third place finish and he got to that match up by defeating Conor Tomac from Sioux Falls O’Gorman by decision, 9-5. Adam Presler from Brandon Valley was Blanchette’s final opponent in the tournament, and just like Hartle, Blanchette fell in the final match by decision, 14-6 to claim fourth place in the 126 pound class.

Jordan Clarke was another individual that placed in the tournament, and he did so in the 145 pound class. Clarke started his run against Jack Sternburg from Brandon Valley and Clarke had no problem moving on by decision, 9-3. Jace Christensen, a Junior from Flandreau, gave Clarke a challenge, and in the end, Christensen moved on by fall in 3:29. For his third match, Clarke was matched up with Jacob Ziegler from Lennox where Clarke wasted no time in winning by fall in just 35 seconds. Clarke was also able to defeat Connor Smith from Brandon Valley by decision, 10-6, where he faced Regan Bye of Vermillion for a chance to go to the 3rd place match. Bye gained a lot of points right away and that forced Clarke to fall by major decision, 11-1. Even though that was his second loss, Clarke had a chance to wrestle for fifth place. Grant Dougherty from Brandon Valley was his opponent and Clarke fell in the match, giving him sixth place in the tournament.

Ben Loosbrock continued his success this season by adding a second place finish to his collection. Loosbrock got there by first pinning Corey Fichter of Sioux Falls O’Gorman in just 58 seconds. In the second round, the match concluded as time expired, but Loosbrock was able to move on by major decision, 12-2, over Dorian Simpson from Sioux Falls Roosevelt. He continued his success in gaining points against Spencer Oeltjenbruns from Luverne where he won by decision again, 8-1. In the championship match, he was matched up with Reagan Francom from Huron. Both Seniors had a great match as the points were close all the way through, but Francom was crowned champion by decision, 3-0.

The final Warrior wrestler to place in the tournament was 220 pound Senior, Brian Behrends. Behrends began his run with a bye in the first round, where he met up later with DJ Reker from Luverne. Both wrestlers were evenly matched, but when the clock struck 5:38, Behrends was able to roll Reker on his back and get credited with a pin. Leon Maxwell from Dell Rapids was another tough challenge for Behrends, and it proved to be that way in the end. Behrends fell in the match in 5:03 where he was paired up with Jeremiah Johnson from Huron for the chance to go to the third place match. Behrends fought him off for half of the match, and was able to advance by fall shortly after in 3:34. In the final match of the day, Behrends was paired up once again with Reker. Unfortunately for Behrends, Reker didn’t allow him to get the pin, and Behrends claimed fourth place in the tournament.

As a team, the Warriors placed 12th overall with 89 points. After a short break, the Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Adrian to take on the Dragons.
