Warriors earn first team win against River Valley in the triangular held at Wabasso

January 16, 2013

By: Sean Solheim, Fulda Free Press staff writer
On Thursday, the Warriors traveled to Wabasso to compete in a triangular with Wabasso/Red Rock Central and River Valley. The match with River Valley was a quick one, but it proved to be a great one for the Warriors as they won as a team against them.

To start the day off, Jon Gehl wrested against Devin Johnson of River Valley in the 106 pound class where the match didn’t last an entire minute. Gehl had full control of Johnson right from the start and in 52 seconds, Gehl was able to earn the victory by pin.

The Warriors were able to go up 12-0 right away as a team after Clayton Hartle earned a win by forfeit in the 113 pound class. Tate Meyer fought hard in his match, but in the end fell just short of another victory as Connor Bertram took the decision, 4-7. Ben Blanchette bounced back for the Warriors and earned himself a victory by decision, 9-5 over Sam Baier in the 126 pound class. River Valley was able to gain back the lost points in the first two matches as they earned pins in back to back matches. Garritt Meidl began with a pin over Will Gehl, and Alexis Flores earned a pin against Dalton Keeler. The score was tied up after the two pins at 15 points per side, until Jordan Clarke came through in the 145 pound class. He was matched up with Gaige Garner and in just 20 seconds, Clarke was able to earn himself a pin, which gave the Warriors a six point advantage in the team total. From there, the Warriors had all the advantage in the world for the rest of the match. Tanner Nelson, Ethan Heintz, and Ben Loosbrock all earned wins by forfeit. Tim Krueger was the next wrestler for River Valley and he was matched up with Dylan Nelson. Krueger was able to give River Valley some points back by technical fall, 17-2, but as the match drew to its conclusion, River Valley could not do anything to catch up. In the end, the Warriors were victorious, 39-30.

The day wasn’t done for the Warriors as they had to battle with Wabasso/Red Rock Central following the win against River Valley. In that match, the Warriors had a tough time agianst Wabasso/RRC.

F/MCC’s first win of the match came in the113 pound class with Hartle. He was matched up with Justin Frank where the match went the distance and Hartle was able to win by decision 6-2. Ben Blanchette was able to win a very close match later on against Josh Altermatt. Just like Hartle’s match, the bout went the distance and Blanchette was able to make a final move in the last few seconds to secure a win by decision, 10-9. The next win came way later in the match when Ben Loosbrock was able to sneak out a win by decision against Blake Altermatt 4-3. Brian Behrends was the only other Warrior to win a match and he did so in the 220 pound class against Brian Hagberg. The Warriors fell in the match as a team, 51-15.
