Did you know that in Minnesota 1 in 6 children go to bed hungry every night?
Did you know that Minnesota is ranked 10th highest in childhood hunger?
More than 16 million kids here in the USA are lacking enough food. To get a better picture of this huge issue, all of those children would fill 200,000 school buses!
Across the state and nation many different groups and individuals are trying to lower these numbers. One national organization, No Kid Hungry, has set up a contribution website so that anyone can help pay for nutritious meals for these hungry children. Simply go online to NoKidHungry2.org/schools to sign up and contribute.
At the national Share Our Strength organization, No Kid Hungry is more than a tagline or campaign slogan: “It is our reason for being. Everything we do and each new person who helps us represents a step toward the finish line!” That is a direct quote from the organization.
This past year the local FCCLA members have accepted the challenge to do their part to help end childhood hungry. Currently, Kelsey Heppler is coordinating just such a project. Earlier in the school year, the members completed fundraisers for No Kid Hungry and also helped collect food during the city wide food drive. The Jr. High members also created a power point that informed others about this problem. They also made Holiday Food boxes for needy families and now are ready to present the food shelf with 'Meal In A Bag' food items. These bags will include a recipe and all of the non-perishable food items to make a lunch or dinner meal. If perishable food items are needed, a voucher will be included in the bag and may be redeemed at the local grocery store. The members will be restocking the food shelf with bags on a regular basis for the next several months. As FCCLA members, we felt that we could help solve this real-life problem by becoming involved with this community effort to fight hunger. This way everyone wins!!!!
