Fulda Lions 50 years strong

March 6, 2013

By Norma Dittman, Fulda Free Press staff writer
Recently, a large manila envelope was received by Fulda Lion Dan Uttech from Lion Harold Marske, Worthington, MN. Inside the envelope were several pieces of the history relevant to the Fulda Lions Club.

As has been mentioned recently in the Fulda Free Press, the Fulda Lions Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday March 9th, at the Fulda Legion/Community Hall with a Social Hour, a Buffet Dinner, and entertainment by the Fulda Area Big Band.

Harold Marske was the District Governor for District 5M-5 for Lions International when the Fulda Lions Club was established in 1963, and served as Toastmaster for the Charter Night Celebration. The Charter Night Banquet was held on Monday, March 4, 1963 at the First Presbyterian Church.

Within the information received by Lion Uttech was an original copy of the Charter Night Banquet Program. The program expresses appreciation to the Worthington Lions Club for sponsoring the Fulda Lions Club to get them organized. It also lists the first Fulda Lions Club officers as Peter Lindquist, President; Harold Nelson, First Vice President; Alex Fisher, Second Vice President; Clifford Mansmith, third Vice President; Kenneth Roberts, Secretary-Treasurer; E.O. Reusse, Lion Tamer; and George Estrem as tailtwister. The directors were Walter Roti, Vern L. Kirk, Clement Smith, and J. Frank Osborne .

The evening’s program included a call to order, Pledge Allegiance to the Flag, singing of America, and an invocation. It also included the presentation of the Fulda Lions Charter. The back of the program carried the Lions motto of “We Serve” and their slogan:

L for Liberty

I for Intelligence

O for Our

N for Nation’s

S for Safety.

Charter members of the Fulda Lions Club were V. L. Kirk, Alex Fisher, George Estrem, A. H. Bodelson, Thomas Webb, Lloyd Christopherson, Clement Smith, Harry E. Sanborn, Walter Roti, Kenneth F. Roberts, E. O. Reusse, H. C. Nelson, J. Frank Osborne, Peter Lindquist, Clifford Mansmith, Rex Simmons, E. J. Horn, Albert Speckmier, J. T. Schueller, L. C. Gerhard,

Cecil Kilbride, R. P. Howe, John P. Hyslop, George Highum, H. W. Scroeder, Alvin Goins, Oscar Pederson, and George Johnson.

Several letters were included in the historical information packet sent by Marske - one of which states that the organization date of the Fulda Lions Club was January 24, 1963. Credit for the organization of the new club was given to Russell Jensen, Herold Marske, and Ernie Dorn. That letter was sent to A. J. Tesarek, District Governor, Lions International, in Hopkins, Minnesota by V. H. Bradshaw, Manager, Extension Division of Lions International.

Former District Governor Marske wrote that he did “many, many Master of Lion Charter nights and that old memories bring back ‘good stuff’ for an 87 year old.” He included a copy of the script that he used during the Fulda Lions Club Charter Night Banquet.

Fulda Lions Club members can be proud of their history and of all of the good that the Club has done for the Fulda community over its fifty years of service.
