In Memory of Ernest Kafka

1931-ERNEST KAFKA-2013
Ernest ďErnieĒ Steve Kafka was born on December 22, 1931 in Dante, South Dakota to John and Barbara Rados Kafka. He grew up in Dante and attended country school. On January 14, 1952 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Ernie was stationed in Texas, Wyoming, Maine, Japan, Alaska and Iowa. On January 10, 1954 he and Lillian Baker were married at St. Maryís Catholic Church in Old Town, ME. Ernie was honorably discharged on December 2, 1954. Following their marriage they remained in Old Town for a year before moving to Dante, SD. In 1958 they moved to a farm near Luverne, MN and in 1960 they moved to Beaver Creek, MN where Ernie worked as a bartender. He also served on the Beaver Creek City Council and on the fire Department. In 1969 they moved to Hadley, MN where they ran the Liquor Store until 1971 when they moved to Slayton. Ernie worked at Solar Gas in Slayton for five years. He then worked at Midwest Supply in the tire shop for five years and later was caretaker for Southgate apartments in Slayton. He retired in 1989 due to health reasons. In 2010 they moved to the Golden Horizons Assisted Living in Worthington, MN. Ernie passed away at his home in Worthington on Friday, April 12, 2013 at the age of 81. He was a member of St. Annís Church in Slayton. Ernie enjoyed shooting pool, playing cards, fishing, woodworking, crafts, doing jigsaw puzzles, gardening and painting on saw blades.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Kafka of Worthington, MN, five children and their spouses, David and Jill Kafka of Forest Lake, MN, Mary Jean and David Evans of Pipestone, MN, Dan and Brenda Kafka of Ortonville, MN, Dean and Cama Kafka of Stewartville, MN, and Betty and Gary Sandhurst of Fulda, MN, 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one sister, Dorothy Monson of Montevideo, MN and two sisters-in-law, Wanda Kafka of Luverne, MN and Betty Kafka of Mesa, AZ. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Zach Kafka and two brothers, James and LaVern Kafka.

Memorial Services were held at St. Annís Catholic Church in Slayton, MN on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. James Seitz officiating with remembrance by Pastor James Sickmeyer. The organist is Judy Andrews. Interment is at St. Annís Cemetery, Slayton, MN.
