Davis Moore, Worthington, MN correctly spelled the word “physician” to win this year’s Southwest Minnesota Spelling Bee.

Nearly 50 fifth and sixth grade students participated in the first round of the Southwest Minnesota Spelling Bee that was held on Saturday morning at Fulda Elementary School. The first round consisted of a written test of 40 words.

From that round, the top 13 students advanced into the second round. The second round was an oral round and each student was required to spell the same five words.

Five students were chosen for the final round through the totals scored from their first and second round. A ‘spell-off’ was held to determine their placings. The results were 5th place: Jayda Castaway, Fulda; 4th place: Celeste Aamodt, Murray County Central; 3rd place: Alyssa Boynton, Murray County Central; 2nd place: Kalea Appel, Worthington; and 1st place: Davis Moore, Worthington.

The team from Murray County Central earned 1st place through their combined scores and Worthington was the runner-up.

Schools that participated in the Southwest Minnesota Spelling Bee were Brewster Elementary, Edgerton Public, Fulda, Hills-Beaver Creek, Jackson County Central, MCC, Windom, Worthington Middle School, and Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

Students from Fulda Elementary who participated were Jayda Castaway, Harlie Welling, Evany Luna, Tucker Engelkes, Breanna Golda, and London Swan, alternate.
