In Memory of Leslie Janssen

1939 - LESLIE E. JANSSEN - 2013
LESLIE E. JANSSEN, 74, of Lakefield passed away on Sunday, June 02, 2013 at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington.

Leslie Eldon Janssen arrived two months premature on April 4, 1939 to Arthur and Elisabeth Dorothea (Wenzel) Janssen. He was born at home on his parents' farm in Graham Township, Kimbrae, Minnesota. He was confirmed on March 29, 1953 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School in Fulda, Minnesota, and graduated from Fulda High School in 1957.

In 1956, Les joined the Army reserve for six months active duty and 6.5 years reserve duty.

On August 6, 1960, Les and Delores Kilker were married at the Church of Christ in Worthington, Minnesota. They farmed near Fulda, Minnesota until 1966. Les worked for Great Plains Lumber Company for 13 years, and then worked for Lampert Yards for 3.5 years. He was custodian at the Immanuel Lutheran Church and Parochial School in Lakefield, Minnesota for 20 years. After his retirement, Les drove school bus for JCC Schools for three years. He had a special gift and patience in working with children.

Les was very involved in activities at Immanuel Lutheran Church, having played on their dart ball team, and serving on many boards. He served on the zoning board for the City of Lakefield and was a volunteer fireman for the Vesta, Fulda and Lakefield, Minnesota communities.

Les' favorite hobby was working with the scroll saw and gifted many of his family and friends with his woodwork. One of his favorite daily activities was his coffee group at Hage's.

Les is survived by his wife of 52 years, Delores; three children: Lance (Laurie) Janssen, Spencer, Iowa; Dorean (Russ) Thom, Bingham Lake, Minnesota; and Devin (Julie) Janssen, Rochester, Minnesota; and six grandchildren: Cassandra Thom, Sturgis, South Dakota; Allison Janssen, Storm Lake, Iowa; Dustin Thom, Windom, Minnesota; Melissa Janssen, Des Moines, Iowa; Elizabeth Janssen and Samuel Janssen, Rochester, Minnesota; a brother, Loren Janssen and his special friend Jumpetch Harlan, Great Falls, Montana; a sister, Sharie Jasper, Yuma, Arizona; mother-in-law, Lenor Kilker, brothers- and sisters-in-laws, Don Bremer, Burdell and Kaleen Christians, and Galen (Buzz) and Peg Kilker, as well as several nieces and nephews and friends.

Les was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Genise, his parents, his brother, Arliss, and sister, Marian, his father-in-law, Raymond Kilker, and a brother-in-law, Ronald Jasper.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield with Pastors Ben Rucker and Bart Mueller officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Lakefield. Military Rites will be by the Lakefield American Legion and VFW Posts.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., and on Wednesday - one hour prior to the service both at the Church.

Memorials preferred to the Immanuel Lutheran School.
