Fulda Summer Recreation Baseball is in Full Swing!

June 21, 2013

Submitted
Fulda Summer Recreation Baseball has been going for about two weeks even though the weather has not been cooperative. There are three different age groups which consist of the Little Mites (boys that are 10 years old and under), Big Mites (boys that are 12 years old and under), and midgets (boys that are 15 years old and under. Fulda plays in a league with Okabena, Heron Lake, Brewster, and Lakefield. The boys are being coached by Alex Hein and Todd Peterson. They played their first game of the season on Wednesday, June 12th against Okabena.

Ethan Slaathaug was the Little Mites starting pitcher and he started the season off by throwing some heat! Ethan was able to consistently throw strikes and ended up striking out nine Okabena batters. Unfortunately, on this cold afternoon the Fulda bats were unable to warm up as Fulda could not score a run in the game. Brandon Clausen led the team batting with a one hit. Final Score

Fulda: 0 Okabena 1

Payton Marquardt continued the great pitching for Fulda as he was the starting pitcher for the Big Mites. Payton kept the ball in the strike zone and he had some good defensive plays behind him. Devyn Everett and David McBride made some really nice plays in the field. Marquardt went the distance striking out six batters while giving up two runs. Unfortunately, Fulda's hitting struggles continued as Fulda was unable to score a run. Final Score: Fulda 0 Okabena 2

A triple play was not enough for the Midgets, who also saw a good pitching performance as Justin Dierks threw a fine game for Fulda. Fulda was able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a RBI single by Brandon Everett plating Aron Hulstein. Everett later scored on a pass ball. However, Fulda was only able to score one more run in the game. A few defensive errors in the field hurt Fulda's chances and Okabena was able to plate five runs. The highlight of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Austin Blesi snagged a line drive at third base, tagged the runner and then threw over to first to get the 5-3 triple play! Brandon Everett and Aron Hulstein led the team batting as they both were able to collect an RBI.

Final Score:

Fulda 3 Okabena 5

After a rough first day of games, the boys got back to playing the next day as Brewster came to town. The Little Mites got the day off to a great start as the boys bats came alive. Abel Piper led the team batting as he went 2-2 with two singles, a walk, and one RBI. Piper and Zach Their also had excellent performances on the mound as each pitched two innings without giving up a run. Final Score: Fulda 5 Brewster 0

The Big Mites carried the winning momentum into their game as the boys played excellent defense in the field and were equally excellent at the plate. Tyler Madison led the team at the plate as he went 2-3 with two doubles, one run scored, and 4 RBIs. Madison also had a fine pitching performance as he pitched the entire game. The boys won in exciting fashion as Payton Marquardt scored a run from third in the bottom of the last inning on a strikeout of the next batter when the catcher overthrew the first baseman. Final Score: Fulda 6 Brewster 5

The Midgets were able to complete the sweep behind the amazing pitching performance of Will Gehl and the excellent defense behind him. Gehl consistently threw strikes and the defense behind him played solid defense. Gehl pitched a complete striking out 9 Brewster batters while pitching a shutout. Brewster's pitcher also threw a fine game as Fulda only scored one run the entire game, but that's all Will Gehl needed. Aron Hulstein led the team on offense as he was 1-1 with a double and the lone run of the game which he scored on a passed ball.

Final Score:

Fulda 1 Brewster 0
