Jim Surprenant pulled in the farm team class in this weekend’s Draft Horse Show in Slayton, MN. Behind his team was a bright red road grader that was originally purchased for use in Iona Township, Murray County.

“I bought it from Charles Platt, Sr. who used to live northwest of Iona. The Platt’s told me they used to blade roads with it. It is in real nice shape. I didn’t have to do much to the road grader except put a tongue in it and paint it,” Surprenant stated.

Surprenant began working for Murray County in 1970, grading township roads. He retired in 2004.

In 1990, he also bought his own CAT 140G road grader. He continues to blade Iona, Slayton, and Lime Lake township roads.
