Fulda Summer Recreation Baseball Teams play their Final Tournaments of the Summer

July 25, 2013

by Alex Hein
This past week, three of the four Fulda Summer Recreation baseball teams finished their seasons playing tournaments in Okabena. The 15 and under squad started off the week playing their tournament in Okabena against Brewster. Will Gehl got the start for Fulda and he was excellent as he threw 3 1/3 solid innings while striking out seven batters. Justin Dierks threw the final 1 2/3 innings of the game and he was excellent as he was able to gain a save. Offensively, Fulda was led by Brandon Everett as Everett when 3-4 with two singles, a double, and one RBI. Fulda was able to collect seven runs in the game and they gained a narrow victory to advance to the championship game. Final Score: Fulda 7 Okabena 6

In the championship game, Fulda faced off a very tough Heron Lake team. Levi Spittle was the starting pitcher and he was able to consistently throw strikes. Fulda's defense played well behind him, but Heron Lake has an excellent lineup and they hit the ball where the defense couldn't catch it. Fulda's offense struggled at the plate as they were only able to collect one run in the entire game. That run came on a RBI double by Will Gehl which scored Everett. Justin Dierks came in for the final two innings of the game. However, Heron Lake's lineup was just too hot to handle. Final Score: Fulda 1 Heron Lake 11. With the loss Fulda was awarded second place in the tournament.

Later in the week Fulda played a makeup game against Heron Lake. This game was the final game for Austin Blesi and because of this, Blesi was named the starting pitcher for Fulda. Blesi was excellent on the mound for a player that had never pitched before as he threw a complete game. It has been fun watching Austin improve as a baseball player and also mature as a young man. He will be missed by everyone in Summer Rec. Thanks for playing all these years, Austin.

The second day of the Okabena Tournaments saw the 10 and under squad get their chance. In the first game, Fulda had to face a very tough Heron Lake team. Abel Piper was given the nod as the starting pitcher and he was outstanding as Abel pitched a complete game while striking out seven batters and only allowing three runs. However, Fulda struggled at the plate as they were only able to collect one run in the game. Fulda had a few hard hit balls that were fielded very well by the Heron Lake defense. Brandon Clausen knocked in the only run of the game for Fulda s he crushed a RBI single that scored Logan Erdmann. Fulda was unable to give enough run support to Piper and Fulda lost, moving them into the third place game. Final Score: Fulda 1 Heron Lake 3.

In the third place game against Lakefield, Fulda came out swinging hot bats as Fulda got five runs in the first inning of the game. Brandon Clausen had a big RBI single in the inning. Abel Piper, Zach Their, Ethan Slaathaug, Jaxson Tielser, Logan Erdmann, and Rylan Klein. However, Fulda was able to score two more runs in the game. Slaathaug was the starting pitcher for Fulda and he was excellent in his five innings of work as he struck out 11 batters in the game. Lakefield was able to chip away at the Fulda lead in each inning as they were able to get the tying run to third base in the final inning of the game. Fortunately, Slaathaug was able to strike out the final two batters to earn the Fulda squad third place in the tournament. Final Score: Fulda 7 Heron Lake 6

The 10 and under squad improved greatly during the season and it will be interesting to see what these young boys do in their athletic careers. Todd Peterson and Alex Hein had a great time coaching these boys as they always came ready to play and had great attitudes.

The third group to play their end of the year tournament was the 12 and under squad for Fulda. Unfortunately due to the five team format, Fulda had to play a play in-game against a very tough Okabena squad. Levi Spittle got the start for Fulda and he was excellent as he struck out seven batters in the game while only allowing three runs in his complete game effort. The defense behind Spittle also played very well as they consistently made great plays in the field. The highlight of the game on defense came from Tyler Madison as he fielded a hard hit ground ball at shortstop, ran to second and then made a great throw to first to get an inning ending 6-3 double play. Okabena had a three run outburst in the third inning of the game and that was their only runs of the game. However, Okabena also had a strong outing from their starting pitcher as Fulda was only able to score one run in the game. The one run came off the bat of Payton Marquardt as he struck a solo home run in the fourth inning which gave Fulda some life at the plate. However, Fulda was unable to score another run in the game. Final Score: Fulda 1 Okabena 3

The 12 and under squad has some outstanding athletes and it will be exciting to watch these boys develop and compete at a higher level of athletics. These boys love playing the game of baseball and they were a joy to coach.
