Fulda Jr. High Softball team concludes Summer Season The Jr. High softball team wrapped up its season on a high note this past week with strong performances in league play and in their home tournament. The young team started the summer out with tough games against league opponents Edgerton and Adrian, and by participating in the Edgerton tournament. The locals would come up short in the win column in these opening contests, but would gain valuable experience and the practice they would use when reunited with these two teams again at the end of the season. Adrian 13 Fulda 12 Fulda's dramatic last inning comeback falls just short. Fulda traveled to Adrian last Tuesday for league play. A slow start for both teams in the first inning left a 1-1 tie. Fulda's Kasey Hermeling was the lone run for Fulda in the opening frame as she singled her way on base and then stole her way around the diamond eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Adrian would speed up the action in the second inning as a few timely hits mixed with some Fulda errors gave the hosts a five run inning. The locals got their own bats heated up in 3rd and answered with a five run flurry of their own as Hermeling, Courtney Zins, Millie Piper, Nicole Madison, and Allison Kenney all found their way around the pond to pull Fulda within two heading into the 4th inning. That inning would belong to Adrian who put up a four run inning at the plate and held Fulda's bats scoreless. Fulda would trail 6-12 heading into the final frame. The young sluggers would manufacture seven hard fought runs in the top of the inning as Nicole Madison started the Fulda bats with a base hit and eventually scored on a timely hit by Kennedy Deuschle. Kendall Clarke, Allison Kenney, and Kasey Hermeling all drew walks with patience at the plate and Fulda was in business on the base paths. Randi Tielser would smash a key hit driving home two, followed up by Courtney Zins ripping a shot to the outfield clearing the bases and eventually scoring to tie the game at 12-12. Fulda's defense tried to hold strong as Adrian claimed the last bat and a chance to win in the bottom of the inning, but the home team filled the bases quickly, and it was too much for Fulda to overcome as Adrian singled home the winning run and captured a 13-12 victory in a well played contest.

Jr. High girls shine at Fulda Tournament

Fulda hosted its annual Jr. High Tournament last Wednesday. Fulda opened first round play with a tough loss to Edgerton 1 team. Fulda's sluggish start opened the gates for Edgerton as they pounded home ten runs in the opening three innings of play. The locals would gather their composure and settle in as they closed the gap in the 4th inning at 9-10, but it proved to be too late as Edgerton 1 held on to claim a 14-12 opening round victory.

The home team would re-group quickly as they played the turnaround game in the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament where they would face Edgerton 2. This time Fulda jumped out of the gates early as Kasey Hermeling scored in the opening frame, and Nicole Madison and Claire Westra would round the bases in the 2nd giving Fulda a 3-1 cushion. Randi Tiesler and Brandi Spies took turns on the mound for locals on the day, and finished this contest only allowing one more run and helping Fulda to the 3-2 win.

To advance to the championship round Fulda would have to knock off Adrian. The home team would do just that in a tight contest 5-4. A 2 RBI double by Nicole Madison in the 1st inning brought in Courtney Zins and Millie Piper to start things rolling for Fulda. Claire Westra, Kennedy Deuschle and Brandi Spies would all hustle home in the 2nd inning to give Fulda the small cushion they would need. Adrian threatened with some base runners in the bottom of the final inning, but solid defense for Fulda would seal the victory and send them to the champion game while giving Adrian a 3rd place finish.

In the final round, Fulda would once again face Edgerton 1 who made their way through the bracket without a loss on the day. The championship contest would be a defensive battle as both teams played error free throughout. Nicole Madison doubled in the 2nd inning and was knocked in by Dueschle to get Fulda on the board first through 2 innings of play. Edgerton would answer in the 3rd inning with a run of their own. The final inning brought an intense finish as Millie Piper scampered home in the top of the inning giving Fulda a 2-1 edge heading into Edgerton's final at bat. Fulda's defense couldn't hold off Edgerton's crafty base running and they edged the locals 3-2 for the title. Fulda would finish a fine day's performance with a strong second place finish.

Fulda Girls end season with big finish over Edgerton

In the final contest of the summer season for both teams, fans were treated to an offensive showdown. Inning after inning, hit after hit both teams answered the other with base runners and runs on the scoreboard. Fulda would hold strong having to come from behind numerous times throughout the contest and respond to Edgerton's hot bats. The locals did just that in the bottom of the last inning as they trailed by one. Kasey Hermeling would scamper home and tie the game at 14-14. Edgerton would hold off the remaining comeback and send the game into extra innings. In the top of the extra frame, Edgerton drove in two big runs once again leaving Fulda in a position where they had to answer the bell. Kennedy Dueschle would draw the leadoff walk. Kasey Hermeling and Randi Tiesler connected on back to back singles driving in Dueschle and giving Fulda the tying and go ahead runners on the base paths. Courtney Zins drove in Hermeling with a hit, advancing Tiesler the winning run to 3rd base with 2 outs and Millie Piper at the plate. Piper would deliver a smash driving in the winning run and ending the thriller in fine fashion for the home team. Congratulations girls on a successful summer season!
