Emma and Isaac Chepa are a brother and sister who, on Monday, were eager for 4-H project judging to begin at the Murray County Fair. Their projects completed, they were looking forward to sharing what they have learned as they had created display boards that highlight subjects that they are strongly interested in.

Isaac, who will be in sixth grade this fall at Fulda Elementary School, created a display board that detailed the different types of wetlands that are found in Minnesota’s 72 State Parks. “I like hunting, fishing and kayaking, so I have an interest in wetlands and wanted to learn more about them,” Isaac shared. He said that he likes to hunt ducks. When fishing, he does not have a favorite fishing spot.

On his wetlands display board, he used several different colored stickers, placing them on a map of the state of Minnesota. The stickers indicate where the different wetlands are located. There are six different types of wetlands in Minnesota State Parks.

Many facts about the wetlands were adhered to Isaac’s display board.

Isaac is also showing a shelf that he made for the Work Shop Project. “I found this piece of wood and it looked like a shelf to me,” Isaac stated. “We had to saw the back off so that it would be flat. And then I sanded off some of the bumps that it had.”

The piece of wood was left basically in its raw state to show the beauty of the wood. “We added picture hangers to the back so it is ready to be hung up,” Isaac added.

This is Isaac’s first year in 4-H and he is enjoying it. “My sister is in 4-H and I saw the fun she is having as a member, so I joined, too” Isaac said.

Emma will be in the eighth grade at Fulda High School this fall. She has been a member of Murray County 4-H for the past three years.

One of her projects was created for the Geospatial division of judging. “I chose geocaching because it is fun to do. Mom looked geocaching up on the computer and we got started doing it as a family,” Emma explained.

“The first step is to find a location for your container, and I explained that on my display board. Step two is to make the container and fill it. For step three, I took the hand-held GPS and found the coordinates of my location. In step four, you submit the coordinates and someone online makes sure that they are correct. For step five, you just keep checking the container to make sure that it is still there. When someone finds the cache, they are welcome to take the contents, as long as they leave their name on the list,”E mma said. “I really like geocaching because you get to be outside and see the animals and birds. It helps you to learn how to use the GPS and you learn how to enter the coordinates into it.”

Emma’s other fair project was done about cats. Using the family’s pet, Tiger, she posted a photo of herself with Tiger in the center of her display board.

“I wanted to learn more facts about cats and I found many interesting facts that I had not known,” Emma stated.

Some of the facts on Emma’s board included that ‘a group of cats is called a clowder’, ‘cats lap liquid from the underside of their tongue, not the top side’, ‘cats have thirty teeth’, and ‘the oldest cat recorded was in England and was 36 years old’.

Isaac and Emma are members of the Bondin-Belfast 4-H Club. They were looking forward to participating in the Murray County Fair which is scheduled for August 14th through 17th.
