Fulda City Council holds public hearing on water rate increase

September 11, 2013

by Jerry Johnson
The public hearing on the new water rates drew questions on the cities 15 year plan to pay off the one million dollar bond. Improvements to the water treatment plant are almost complete and an increase of water quality as the water lines and tower are flushed and cleaned. The yearly expenses are projected to be $357,250.00 which includes $84,500.00 bond payment, $25,000.00 each in both short and long lived asset reserves. $65,000 is included for salaries. The city pumped 44,016,941 gallons of water last year of which 31,269,550 were sold last year. The average use of water per connection is 144 gallons or 65 gallons per person.

The new rate increase will add $8.61 for a 500 gallon per month user, $11.47 for a 1,000 gallon user and $17.23 for the 4,000 gallon user. The additional cost per thousand gallons is $5.72. The user fee, which is now called the base rate, is $25 per month or $300 per year. Although no one was pleased with the increase there were no strong objections.
